Location, Proposals & Benefits

Location, History & Setting

Maryport is a bustling coastal town, complete with an attractive working harbour, tourist attractions and a great community feel. However, its food retail offering was limited, which has led to more than 60% of the town’s residents heading out of town to do their supermarket shop.

The land at Miltofts, which sits just off Curzon Street, was surplus land owned by Allerdale Borough Council which for many years was used by local sports teams for football and rugby, and by local people for dog walking and recreation.

Our Proposals

Supermarket chain Lidl wanted to build a 2,500 square metre store on land at Miltofts – one of the largest in the country – and the first of a new generation of the company’s foodstores to be built in the UK. After some 18 months in construction the new store opened in November 2016.

The development also included improved sports pitches for the town's sports clubs.

Benefits

The development of the Lidl supermarket on the Miltofts site in Maryport led to the following benefits for the local community:

  • Wider customer choice.
  • More people visiting the town and doing their weekly shop in its shops.
  • More than 30 new jobs, together with additional construction employment.
  • The sports clubs which use the existing site will have their sports pitches repositioned to a section of the site which has better drainage and they will be properly marked for both rugby and nine-a-side football matches.
  • A new safe pedestrian route, away from traffic, will also be created for those who walk around the area.
